Geography of Participating Hromadas

The program engages communities located near the frontlines, as well as those that have welcomed the largest numbers of internally displaced persons. These are communities that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) team works with on a continuous basis — supporting people who have experienced loss, improving humanitarian conditions, and creating opportunities for recovery.

Why It Matters

A few years ago, Ukrainian communities had the strength and resources to grow. After decentralization, they gained experience in managing local budgets, cooperating with businesses, and building sustainable development strategies. Life was active — new roads, inclusive spaces, cultural initiatives, and grassroots projects shaped thriving local environments.

Then the war changed everything. Communities lost people, local businesses shut down, and funding dried up. But what remained was resilience — the willingness to protect, care for, and support one another, even under shelling.

Now, communities are ready to rebuild. They have ideas and energy — to transform abandoned buildings into coworking hubs, to create safe spaces for children, to reconnect people with culture and learning. But without funding, these plans stay on paper. Traditional support channels are limited, while the needs are greater than ever.
