Imagine a child who strives to color the world with bright colors, but cannot distinguish shades due to optic nerve atrophy. Or a child who dreams of active games during recess, but constantly stumbles due to amblyopia. Trying to focus on text in a book, but letters blur before their eyes due to astigmatism or myopia.
These are not just complications, these are daily challenges faced by 174 students of Konotop Special School. For over 50 years, this school has been a true home for children with various diagnoses: optic nerve atrophy, astigmatism, myopia, amblyopia, strabismus and others. Some of them have only recently undergone eye microsurgery. In addition to ophthalmological problems, 77 students have speech disorders, and 69 have musculoskeletal problems, which further complicates their daily life and learning.
The school does incredible work, providing systematic psychological and pedagogical support, correctional and developmental services, education using Braille and special equipment. Here children who live in the dormitory and those who come to the day department receive knowledge and social development. The school pays special attention to orphaned children, children under guardianship, those who find themselves in difficult life circumstances, and children with disabilities (including cerebral palsy).
Despite all the titanic efforts of the school and its dedicated teachers, there is one major problem that stands in the way of the full development of these children: the lack of modern diagnostic equipment for vision. Without it, doctors cannot timely and accurately track changes in vision, which means that treatment and correction may not be as effective as they could be. This is not just a medical problem - it affects a child's academic success, their emotional state, their ability to interact with the world.
Therefore, we developed an action plan, conducted consultations with specialists, and selected the most optimal equipment for the needs of children and the school.
Our idea:
We aim to raise funds for the purchase of a modern autorefractometer CRK-1 Charops Huvitz - a device that automatically determines nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. It will be installed in the school's medical office, which will allow vision examinations to be conducted to track progress in children's treatment.
We plan to examine all school students in the first stage, and new groups later.
Quality vision diagnostics for children will help in treatment, which will consequently contribute to improving children's academic success and comfort in learning. Modern equipment will become a resource for the institution for years to come.
The project will contribute to creating an inclusive environment where each child's health is at the center of attention. We believe that modern apparatus for vision diagnostics is not just a technical upgrade, but a real chance for a better life for children.
