Nafta Theatre

Hello! We are "Nafta" — an alternative independent theatre created in Kharkiv in 2018. "Nafta" is an open theatrical platform with no fixed troupe or classical canons. Actors, directors, musicians, choreographers can join "Nafta" and implement new theatrical projects. "Nafta" is about openness, experiments, new forms and creative synergy. We set ourselves tasks to "break standards, gnaw frameworks and burn to the essence".

Over 4 years the theatre released 11 premieres, 5 of which were created with UCF support. Several educational and research projects were also conducted, such as "Generatoria", "Safe Theatre Laboratory" and lectures, concerts and performances. A Performative Laboratory functioned at the theatre, masterclasses were held. We managed to purchase new equipment, renovate and arrange the theatre space, creating a modern chamber venue for art practices in Kharkiv center. "Nafta" managed to unite about 50 artists working in various fields: theatre, music, performative, visual art etc.

On February 24 due to the RF army invasion, the theatre's activities were suspended. Part of our team remained in Kharkiv, actively engaging in volunteer work, while other artists were forced to relocate but continued creative activities.
Today we strive to restore the theatre's activities in Kharkiv. We see the need to create a field for social and creative dialogue, for art to become an instrument of psychological support and revival of the frontline city. This project aims to develop and support Ukrainian culture and Kharkiv's cultural life in particular by creating relevant, professional and quality cultural products that consolidate society. Therefore, the theatre team resumes the project's voice in the city and returns to artistic activity.
