Social living space for children with disabilities "Step to independence - learning to live alone"
Launched on: 01.04.2026

The Center for comprehensive rehabilitation of children with disabilities in Myrhorod is a municipal rehabilitation institution that provides a complex of rehabilitation measures for children with disabilities, as well as children under 3 years old (inclusive) who are at risk of becoming disabled, aimed at preventing, reducing or overcoming physical, mental disorders, correcting developmental disorders, teaching basic social and household skills, developing abilities, creating prerequisites for integration into society.

About 160 children with disabilities undergo comprehensive rehabilitation at the Center annually, 25 of them are IDPs. Cooperation with territorially close territorial communities is also established. Today, children from 6 communities visit the institution.

The Center actively participates in projects:

- USAID "IMPROVING EFFICIENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS" ("HOVERLA") "Equipment for rehabilitation of children with disabilities and at-risk children with autism spectrum disorders, sensory and speech disorders." Purchased "Forbrain" headset, "World of Sounds" software for studying sound environment and speech development.

- MAG "Equipment for sensory room".

- MAG "Playground at the Center for comprehensive rehabilitation of children with disabilities in Myrhorod" (children's swing "Vertelka").

-MAG "Playground arrangement" (Gazebo) for conducting master classes and educational activities in the yard.

- IOM "Countering human trafficking and assisting vulnerable groups in Ukraine" - "Creating an inclusive playground for children with disabilities"

- UNDP in Ukraine within "EU4Recovery- Empowering communities in Ukraine" project with EU financial support" - "Safety of children with disabilities in the community". Purchased interactive panel, laptop, bracelets with addresses, phones and diagnoses of children with disabilities, smart watches for nonverbal children to track their location.

We decided to submit the project because many children with disabilities undergoing rehabilitation in the community often have significant difficulties in forming and performing self-care skills that are critically important for daily life. This manifests in partial or complete dependence on adults in meeting basic needs — such as eating, dressing, personal hygiene, organizing personal space, etc.

The lack of properly equipped environment for safe and gradual learning of life skills restrains independence development in children, reduces their self-confidence, complicates social integration and future adaptation to adult life.

Testing results by Center specialists using PEDI scale, ICF scale, Barthel index, individual child development program and parent surveys show difficulties in household orientation (using household appliances, cooking, cleaning, etc.), lack of time planning skills, interaction with others, and emotional-psychological stability important for forming motivation for independent living.

As a result of project implementation for children of Myrhorod territorial community and territorially close communities, an adapted space will be created where children can learn self-care, hygiene, work with household appliances, develop social and psychological skills in a safe environment.
