Mokryi Zhykhor Ravine Park

"Zhyhorets" – a small river in the Don basin, left tributary of the Udy River (length – 16 km, drop – 65 m), on the southern outskirts of Kharkiv. It originates 200 m south of the "O.S.Maselsky" metro station where the "Mokryi Zhykhor" ravine once began. In the 80s, during construction, the ravine up to Oleksandrivsky Avenue was filled in and the river was hidden in a concrete collector. Beyond Oleksandrivsky Avenue, 114, the river emerges on the surface and flows through Mokryi Zhykhor ravine, has many springs and forms the boundary between two Kharkiv districts - Nemyshlyansky and Industrial.

During the Russian occupation invasion of Ukraine, our city suffered numerous losses but did not surrender thanks to people who defended and continue to defend their homeland with their lives. During water supply outages, the barely equipped Zhyhorets springs also saved thirsty civilians from both districts, forming long queues for drinking water. Now it's our turn to give back.

The eco-activist group New Kharkiv, working on restoring the ecological state of the Zhyhorets River and its protective riparian zone in Mokryi Zhykhor ravine, needs community support and help to stop ecocide and solve the following issues.

The following problems require urgent solution:

Stop sewage leaks into the river.

Clean, protect and restore the riverbed.

Remove all excess: construction, household waste and tires.

Cut and remove deadwood and invasive box elder maple.

Create and restore storm drain collectors on both sides of the ravine.

Install road signs at the river crossing with the avenue.

Long-term plans:

1. Research and equip all accessible drinking water springs.

2. Reinforce dangerous slopes and build stairs at park entrances.

3. Set up recreation areas for children and adults.

4. Green cleaned areas with perennials and trees.

5. Build an embankment road from Raskova St. to Oleksandrivsky Ave.

6. Create a "green corridor" along Zhyhorets River for travel beyond Kharkiv.
