"Workshop of Dignity" - a woodworking workshop for boys with disabilities with experience of living in institutions.

Inclusive woodworking workshop by the organization "House of Dignity" (Zhytomyr region).

We work with men who have mental and physical disabilities and complex life experiences. 7 guys currently living in the "House of Dignity" Community spent years of isolation in an institutional facility.

Our mission is to restore these people's right to a dignified life, self-fulfillment, and a sense of belonging to society.

Why this matters right now

The institutional system in Ukraine often creates what is known as "learned helplessness." A person becomes accustomed to having everything decided for them: what to eat, when to sleep, what to do. As a result, initiative, self-belief, and basic independent living skills are lost. Life with a disability in the institutional system becomes a closed circle of isolation.

We believe that every person, regardless of their health condition, has the right to a dignified life, development, and acceptance. Our guys have already left the institution thanks to supported living with volunteer families of the "House of Dignity" community. We strive to add new opportunities and skills to their lives.

Project goal

To equip the existing woodworking workshop with the necessary equipment, tools, and materials so that guys with disabilities, under the guidance of mentor-assistants, can create more products, expand their complexity and quality, and also:

• learn to work with wood
• gain work experience and interaction
• gradually become more independent.

Why wood

Working with wood develops concentration, fine motor skills, spatial thinking, and delivers a tangible result. You see what you've made. You hold it in your hands.

What we will make

We start with simple products: cutting boards, stands, storage boxes. As skills develop, the guys will move on to more complex work: shelves, home décor, children's toys, and eventually small furniture.

Expected results

We measure success concretely: the number of participants engaged in regular sessions; the number of finished products made by hand; and qualitative changes — growth in independence, engagement, and self-confidence among the guys.

What we are raising funds for

• basic woodworking equipment
• hand tools
• consumables (wood, fasteners, coatings)
• setting up a safe workspace
• personal protective equipment.

"House of Dignity" already has experience in accompanying and supporting guys with disabilities; we know their needs through the daily practice of supported living.
