Kharkiv: City Where Walls Speak
Launched on: 24.06.2024

Street art – the silent spirit of the city that preserves history, culture and street philosophy. The artist – the voice of the spirit that conducts dialogue with residents and city guests about their shared pain.

Kharkiv – capital of Ukrainian street art, known for its authentic cultural heritage. Every second there's a threat of building destruction, and with it images on their walls – unique examples of contemporary art that reflect the city's visual history.

A large part of modern Ukrainian culture is already lost forever: missile strikes completely destroyed more than 1000 works. Moreover, 34% of those surveyed in the YouGov study "Graffity is an art form, says public" consider all street art vandalism. This opinion hinders street art development and popularization.

Our team's project aims to solve these acute social, though sometimes invisible problems.

"Kharkiv: City Where Walls Speak" – a cultural-digital project where each art object has its imprint.

We – a creative team of representatives from the finance and partnerships department of the Youth Council under the Kharkiv Mayor. For 7 years our advisory body has been creating opportunities for youth development and building space for effective cooperation between city authorities, youth, public organizations and all citizens. How will our project work?

At each street art object location we'll install plaques reflecting the artist's unique style. 150 plaques, created in collaboration with authors, will have QR codes that when scanned open access to a multi-link platform. Everyone can learn additional information about the object and its author. Visual and text materials will be created for each street art piece, allowing users to virtually familiarize themselves with it. We use Google Maps to mark art object locations, making them easy to find on the city map.

What do we need for project implementation?

Raising the necessary 135,500 hryvnias for a cultural project during war is an ambitious task. However, we can accomplish it together by uniting efforts of everyone who cares about preserving Kharkiv's cultural heritage. Any support – financial or sharing project information – is extremely valuable. Become part of our team right now!
