Clean beaches of Odesa "Eco-ashtrays"
Launched on: 25.07.2016

One cigarette butt thrown into the sea pollutes 8 cubic meters of water, and a cigarette filter decomposes for about 10 years. Everyone who has been to Odesa beaches can imagine how much our people "love" the Black Sea.

We spent a long time choosing materials and methods to combat the boorish attitude towards cleanliness on beaches. Currently, there are several ashtray options, but unfortunately, disposable ones are only suitable for establishments, while beaches only use reusable ones, which don't suit our mentality (taken home, why carry it around, etc.).

The main problem with an inexpensive eco-ashtray option is the burning temperature of tobacco in the butt: it reaches t-1200 C. Having studied many options and materials for making disposable ashtrays (fireproof fabric based on glass or ceramics, foil paper "tetrapack" etc.), we concluded that these options harm ecology even more, are harmful to people, expensive, or impractical. Based on our research and advice from manufacturers of these materials, we created our own "ECO-ashtray".

"Eco-ashtrays" made of thick cardboard with double fire protection. The design will consist of cardboard treated with a patented fire-resistant agent approved by Ukraine's Emergency Ministry and domestically produced, and a valve that cuts off oxygen (protects from ignition).

The cardboard doesn't ignite from contact with an unextinguished butt, but smolders. This doesn't give 100% fire protection, but if you extinguish the butt in sand or knock off the burning part, the protection level increases.

The problem of beach and sea pollution with cigarette butts, the fire safety problem on the beach.

One cigarette butt thrown into the sea pollutes 8 cubic meters of water, and a cigarette filter decomposes for about 10 years. If the problem isn't solved soon, the pollution level of beaches and seawater may become critical.

By creating fireproof eco-ashtrays and placing them in free access on Odesa beaches.
