Reading children: books in Odesa libraries 2.0
Did you know that libraries are popular among children today? And that such institutions hold workshops and games? Do you know that children really love to read? And are you aware that libraries, unfortunately, sometimes refuse books to children because they simply don't have them in stock?
We also didn't know about this until we started working on the library project. But after we talked with children, parents and librarians, conducted needs assessment and analysis, we decided that if not now, when, and dared to implement the first crowdfunding for book procurement for toddlers (maybe you were our benefactors then).
Now we're ready for a new stage of the project and again really count on your support!
We want to purchase modern Ukrainian-language books for preschoolers and students on topics of inclusivity, emotional intelligence, ecology, etc.
"Each member of our team has children. We see in practice how books influence worldview formation, brain development, emotional intelligence, develop empathy. We could list much more about what books influence, but since you're here, you understand everything yourself", - says Anna Maievska, project author.
Our team understands the Armed Forces' needs and also constantly donates to defenders, but children grow very quickly. This process cannot wait for victory, so we want to purchase children's books now. Children must get access to quality books as soon as possible.
"My son and I spent 5 hours at the library in Oslo and returned the next day. Huge open-space on 5 floors, lunch zone, children's corners, small stage, cafe, bookstore, comfortable reading places. My son was fascinated, read a lot and discussed new topics with me. And I was inspired by these changes I saw in him and want to open such a library in Odesa. But we start small - by filling libraries with books", - shares Anna Maievska.
Right now the most conscious generation of Ukrainians is growing up - it's in our hands to influence how they'll grow up. The books we purchase together will have a direct impact on this.
We want every Odesa library to become a kind of hub where children spend time with books and communicate. The library can become a place where neural connections will emerge that will create a thinking and acting adult from a little reader.
