"A Word Everyone Understands"

"A Word Everyone Understands": adapting children's books so children with speech difficulties can read, understand and communicate.
We are a team of early intervention specialists working with families raising children with developmental disorders or risk of their occurrence. Daily we work with families where it's difficult for the child to speak or understand speech. Our Public Organization "HEALTHY SOCIETY" has been helping children develop communication, interaction and independence through play and family-oriented approaches for many years.

In our work we constantly face one problem: for many children, ordinary children's books remain inaccessible. Children who don't use oral speech or have difficulties understanding it cannot fully participate in reading, answer questions, express their emotions and thoughts. Reading, which should unite the family, often becomes a moment of disappointment.
That's why the project "A Word Everyone Understands" was born. We want to adapt children's books using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) - pictograms, symbols and visual cues that help children understand the story content and actively participate in shared reading.
We submit this project to the platform because we believe: access to communication is a basic right of every child. When a child can show, choose, respond or share an emotion - not only the reading process changes, the quality of life of the entire family changes. We are inspired by the experience of parents who see their child "speak" using symbols for the first time, and the joy of children who begin to be heard.
As a result of the project:
-children with speech difficulties will get accessible books that will help develop communication and understanding;
-parents and specialists will get a practical tool for interacting with the child;
-community understanding of the importance of alternative communication and inclusion will grow.
We strive to create a world where every child can be heard - even without words.
